Is there a better name than 'Web 2.0'?

Is there a better name than that to describe all of this new stuff we’re seeing on the web?

Got Something to say?

Mark as spam (?)

Hype: Extreme Edition.

Actually I second Bubble 2.0. I’ve heard it elsewhere :)

Really, I like modern web technologies and applications, I just can’t stand branding them with some stupid catch-all, especially not “web 2.0”

Dubaiss on 6 Nov 2005

Stupid, Dumb VCs 2.0. - Web 2.0 is supposed to be about looking at, and using the web in a (relatively) new way… not about new technology and certainly not about another round of bad investments by bad investors if that happens.. then yes, Bubble 2.0

zajako on 7 Nov 2005

Yes Web 3.0, its better because its the next version :O

Web 3.0!

  • Web 1.0 is the gray background web
  • Web 2.0 is the images and css web
  • Web 3.0 is the Ajax web with workable X-browser javascripting

7 No, that's fine

it’s self-explanatory

meow on 6 Nov 2005

I like Web 2.0. The “2.0” implies, to me, a milestone—not necessarily the end of a certain line of development. There will be a Web 3.0, and a Web 4.0, etc. Paradigm shifts are going to start coming at us faster than we care to count them.

TRACKBACKIN' CROSS DA BLOGOSPHEEEERE on 6 Nov 2005

I like the name Web 2.0 because I am a moron who likes hip things even if they don’t exist.

Please hit me with a brick.

ijeff on 6 Nov 2005

how about Net 2.0? hah but Web 2 works

A guy on 7 Nov 2005

I guess it’s alright.

Sun Microsystems calls it the Participation Age, which is equally pretentious.

bkerr on 5 Nov 2005

At least they don’t call it THE MULTIVALENT WEB (or multiweb for short). It could always be worse.

AmbroseChapel on 5 Nov 2005

It was already called DHTML once.

To be fair, AJAX isn’t the same as DHTML.

DHTML would involve loading all the data you needed into your page at the start and then showing/hiding bits of it as you went. It was the only way to vary the content of a page without reloading it.

The XMLHTTPRequest part of of AJAX means that you can get new data from a server when you need it, without reloading the page and without having to load it all before the page displays.

This means that pages now really can behave like applications. The name ought to reflect that.

meow on 6 Nov 2005

Web 2.0 is more than AJAX and DHTML. It’s a different way of looking at where content should come from, and how websites should interact with eachother (consumer-producer, folksonomy). The end result of Web 2.0, assuming it’s embraced and continues to evolve in the direction it’s going, would be a Web 3.0 that doesn’t have pages at all. You’d just ask your computer about “domestic short-haired tabby cats” and it’d tell you everything it (the Internet) knows about them, comprising articles, images, sounds, and videos.

Daniel on 6 Nov 2005

It does not matter how it’s called anyway. It’s disruptive technology!

DTC on 7 Nov 2005

What the hell is web 2.0?

anon on 7 Nov 2005

it’s the new version of the web. You can download a trial version for free :)

DTC on 7 Nov 2005

Where? Can you give me a link? Is (or will) there be an open source version?

montoya.rdpdesign.com on 8 Nov 2005

it’s in beta though. You okay with a few bumps and scratches?

DTC on 8 Nov 2005

I don’t care about bumps and scartches, just give me the link!
