I tried that link, and was stopped cold. Says the video which I selected may be inappropriate for some viewers…. Sorry, I have no idea what this “EMO” thing is.

The video has a catchy little line “Stop my breathing and slit my throat” and I think thats just about what should be done to the Emo trend. I don’t think any teenager doesn’t go through a stage where they think the world is against them, these Emo kids just go entirely too far with it. The whole genre is nothing but an attempt to get their asses kissed by adults because they are “depressed”. If these little freaks had to deal with real depression, they would kill themselves instead of acting like the pansy little attention whores that they are. The cutting make me madder than anything else. They have the need for attention so bad that they cut themselves to get it, but they only do it so that their parents will give them everything they want. The little freaks have no intentions of actually killing themselves, they like their lives to much for that.

The video was very disturbing to me. Something has to have gone terribly wrong in these teens lives to cut themselves and be so obsessed with death.

I agree with the nameless person above. it’s all just an act to try to get what they want out of their parents. There is no way that there could be THAT many teenagers who suffer from depression so seriously that they are so despondant. These kids see how depression affects their parents, and they know their parents will give them their way on everything to stop them from killing themselves. The “Emo” fad is just extreme temper tantrums, but instead of being three years old and bashing their heads off the floor to get their way, they are sixteen years old and cutting their arms to get their way.

I’ve seen the emo craze morph six ways to Sunday. At first, it wasn’t about cutting yourself and taking a serious problem that some people have and turning it into a trend. Sure, emotional music would make them cry and it was a lot of crying over stupid stuff (why won’t s/he like me); but they would bounce around at shows and do the whole “jump” together thing. They also would like the hardcore fast punk metal stuff and mosh to that, so the whole emo thing has changed.

Cutters and people who are depressed are NOT going to buy into this emo thing and it makes a mockery out of those who have these serious problems. Those who are truly cutters are embarassed about it and want to hide it; those who are depressed sure as hell aren’t going to buy into this waste of a fad.

Are emo people still “straight edge” or have they broken off of the emo trend and formed their own thing? I imagine most teens can’t deal with the: no smoking, no drinking, no meat, no drugs, and no sex straight-edge thing. Anyhow, I think it is a whole new thing. However, they used to be one in the same.

I guess the bottom line is I can’t stand what emo has become. Sure, I wasn’t emo even when it stood for something else, but it’s just getting worse by the day. Remember when kids would be pissed off at things that mattered: the government, AIDS, world hunger… now, we have kids who walk around with “truth” written on their hand and cutting themselves because they can’t get a date. Pathetic. I’m sorry, there’s just no other way to describe these kids. It makes me sick. Teen angst has morphed into something counter-productive and it needs to be turned around FAST. Maybe we should un-ban raves and kids would be out learning about “peace, love, unity, and respect” while waving some glowsticks around… oh, wait, I forgot, about 10% of those people did drugs and that’s bad, right? Instead of talking to your kids about drugs and educating them about the world around them (sex, drugs, alcohol, smoking, world hunger, how our government works) we just tell them “no” and they end up cutting themselves and crying to get attention. Real great, parents of American, this is just real great! And, yes, I am blaming the idiot parents who shelter and spoil their kids. What else did we expect?

Sambodhi, you spoke a lot of truth in those words. My husband and I just had a similar discussion. It seems that our generation and those just a bit older than us were so busy trying to give their children more than they had, that they forgot they’re supposed to be parents. I know my mother and my husband’s mother both went through the depression, so they learned to live with very little. Their children, my generation, didn’t like that much, so our main objective is not to live without - we wanted our children to have life better than we did. Unfortunately, I think that well-intentioned plan didn’t include enough discipline (kids know you can’t discipline them now) or life-lessons (both parents are working - usually overtime - to make ends meet). IMO they were given too much with too little responsibility to balance.

I agree with most of Sambodhi’s comments. However I don’t think we can put the entire blame on parents. Some parents do make the mistake of not parenting correctly from day 1 and waiting till it’s too late to make corrections. But we all know that there are peer pressures as well. I really feel sorry for those who feel the need to cut themselves for whatever reason they do it. I watched a program yesterday about a young girl who committed suicide and found encouragement to do so from a web site she visited. Rather than trying to help her…..they encouraged her. What a shame and What a waste. We’ll never know what good she may have contributed to society had she sought help and lived. We are all connected to each other and hopefully would have helped if we could have.

I certainly would have tried, BenY. That makes me sad. :(

It’s really easy to wallow in your pain (voice of experience here, sad to say). It takes support and strength to lift yourself out of the darkness sometimes.

Go to a police station, a school teacher, a guidance counselor, a priest, a youth center. Get help. Cutting is no solution. If it is, tell me how your life got better because you cut yourself.

I HAVE been in major pain and am still living with the legacy of an abused childhood. So, yes…I understand that life is hard, and you have pain and problems. Personally, I’m not condemning you for cutting - just simply pointing out that it’s a short-term solution. I understand that the physical pain lessens your inner pain…but that’s only for a short time. What I wish for YOU to understand, emo grl and razzle, is that there are other options and constructive outlets for your pain. Instead of channeling the world’s wrongs into hurting yourself, try using it to create something like art or music. If you want a real appreciation for what you DO have, try volunteering in a veteran’s facility or an elder care home. Get beyond yourself and use the pain for something good. IMO it’s the only way to give it meaning and feel like you have some purpose. But then, what the hell do I know…I’m in my thirties (ancient by your standards, I’m sure - LMAO!)!

Okay, I’m just going to put my two cents in.

I’m called ‘emo’ at school though I don’t believe in labels. I started to cut at the age of twelve. I’ve been abused both physically and emotionally from friends, family, and peers. My mother and father hit me and my sister, throw us against things and threaten us. I had to watch my father attack my sister, throw things at her, beat her, and pull her hair. We never had the heart to report the abuse though and it’s still happening. You kind of get hurt after that…

I have always felt ashamed of what I do to myself and I try my best to hide my scars. I’ve seeked help so don’t tell me to go see a counselor. I told her and she made me show my cuts to my mother. I’ve been to a counselor and after that, it all started again. I’ve struggled with depression for years and I’ve tried to commit suicide a few times by running infront of cars, slitting my wrists, overdosing, and I got to the point were I would try ANYTHING to kill myself. I made a few more tries but I’m still here. I’m still considered ‘emo’ but I haven’t cut in monthes. I’m not one of those people who used to cut for attention and I don’t think it’s ‘cool’ to self harm. It’s an addiction and it’s hard to stop.

You can say that I’m wrong and I should go and cry in the corner or whine to someone else if you want but I don’t care what anyone thinks about me. I don’t even know you guys so your insults won’t hurt me anyway.

Okay, there is a difference between cutting to get attention, cutting to cope (or “to release pain”), and being downright suicidal.

Jamie, I don’t think anyone here is going to make fun of you for what you went through. Everyone here knows I will be the last person to bash you for what you did to yourself. I have a problem with the people that cut because it’s a fad (and for attention) because it makes a mockery out of people with real issues. Trust me, I’ve had real issues and I’ve tried to kill myself, so I’m a little insulted when some kid thinks it’s cool to cut himself or herself just for the hell of it (and you should be too). I’ve been where you are and you need help. I’m not going to promise anything or say it will or will not work, but when you turn 18 (I know you can’t get it before then) you need to try professional help. Best of luck to you.

Jamie - What you’re describing is a coping mechanism that you’re trying to control, which is WAY different than the “fad” cutters who don’t even understand the definition of a true “problem”. I hope you can hang on long enough to turn eighteen, establish your own life and safe haven, and get yourself professional help. It’s a different (and IMHO much more valuable) experience when you’re doing it for yourself instead of being forced.

A friend sent me the link to this vid, she said I look like the chick. A few years ago, maybe, but I was never emo and I never dressed this way. The video is funny though, I like it. The word “goth-tard” was in my head for a week afterwards.

Seems to me that emos are a bit overly sensitive and can’t handle a simple discussion. If talk causes you such trauma, perhaps you should just turn off the computer and hide in your closet. Most people here are simply trying to understand the motivation behind this “movement”. From what I’ve read here, I’m certainly not impressed.

Nori, being fair, most emos are teenagers who are already at a disadvantage in the “handle a simple discussion” department. They’ll grow into their ability to discuss things with adults right about the same time they out-grow their sisters hip-huggers and get a real fucking job.

good grief- this is all new to me, and scary, since I have two teenage daughters and have never heard of this emo crap.

It is truely disturbing to associate cutting with any particuliar group of people. I mean, it literally makes me want to throw up that anyone would think its cool and want to relate to it. My best friend was a cutter, and I didnt know until years later. She had scarred herself severely over the years, and was afraid to get prenatal care for herself and baby, because she was afraid she would be judged. It took nearly 2 weeks talking every day before she finally told me why she owuld not go to the doctor for her pregnancy. She couldn’t stand the thought of anyone else knowing what she had done to herself. I literally had to go with her for her care, or she would not go. Years of abuse had taken their toll on her ( we both grew up in abusive homes, one reason we were so close as kids) and she said she cut out of sheer anger at her mom and herself. She said she hadnt done it in years, but there was no way to hide what she had done to herself back then. I promised I would never judge her, or allow people/doctors/staff to be judgemental to her, and she finally went in for care. Along with that, I was able to talk with her more, and get her to agree to get some counseling for dealing with those past issues and why she cut in the first place. She is doing well now of course. But it was a hard, heavy road. We were fortunate that she was not the first person the doctors had ever seen that had cut severely, and they were professional to her and treated her with dignity. I thanked them all for that. She is still uncomfortable going to doctor if its someone new to her, but nothing near how she was before.

I wish I would have known back then what she was doing to herself. But there was no way she would have told anyone- and certainly would not have been proud of associating with others about it. The only person who knew was her boyfriend and then later husband, and he was so unsure of what to do, he did not act. It is self mutilation, and is a serious problem, and for my closest friend, a cruel daily reminder of years she wishes to forget.

Looks like a long talk with my daughters is in order this weekend, along with some internet searches about “emo”, so they dont even get interested into something so disturbuing.

“D” you might want to add vampire and goth culture into that if you don’t want your kids getting into things that disturbing. I’ve been to goth clubs (with some people into vampire culture) and that stuff gets way out of hand. However, if your teens get into rave culture, DO NOT believe the hype of news programs. Rave culture is ten times more safe than goth or vampire or even emo culture. Usually, older people in the scene will help protect the young girls and will not let anyone offer them drugs. Plus, I know people say drugs are huge in the culture, but they really aren’t and once you say “no” everyone knows where you stand and they’re cool with your choice. Anyhow, let me think of other movements I might need to warn you about….

d - I love your reaction. More people need to have such open, honest discussions with their kids. Cutting IS self-mutilation and when it happens “naturally” is a truly tragic thing. It’s doing it for the sake of being “cool” which tends to irritate rational people. How wonderful you and your friend have had each other to lean on through the rough spots.

razzle - I respond because I believe there is good in all people. If someone would like to hold an intelligent dialogue so that others can learn, I try to participate. I think if people learn about a subject, and truly understand, then they’ll be less likely to condemn a section of society. I think we need to try to understand one another more. I don’t believe that all self-harmers are emos, the montard :P, nor do I believe all emos are true self-harmers. If you’ve had a struggle with cutting, then you also shouldn’t appreciate anybody just doing it for the sake of attention. It’s a serious illness, and IMO doing it because it’s “trendy” is foolish and makes light of the issue. That’s just my take on it…

Even if somebody (not necissarily emo or adolescent) cuts or self injures for attention, does that not also indicate something wrong with them?

No doubt, A Kid, that it can become addictive. That’s precisely why one shouldn’t experiment with things of this nature. It would be a shame for kids who are basically just going through “growing pains” to turn to this because it’s trendy instead of learning healthier coping skills.

If Emos are good people, they would respect other people’s ideas rather than tell them to go fuck themselves. It’s when people care about each other that they express opionions…not to offend but to help if they can or at least try to understand the rationale. Nowhere, except for the emos, do I find anyone else telling the others to fuck themselves or that they will put shit on u.

i think emos dont like pain really but they can deal with physical pain better than emotional pain and that this is why they cut themselves.

The above ranting is just further proof that emos lack constructive ways of problem solving. When you’re out on your own, you’ll hopefully realize that there are certain ways of acting that allow you to get along in society. If you fail to conform, you’re separated from society - usually in jail. That’s a personal choice. Learn coping skills now while you can if you want to avoid it…or not if that’s what you want to do with your life.

emo isn’t a fad, it started in the 80s as a throwoff from punk (as in the term EMOtional hardcore) with bands such as Big Black and Shellac and anything by Steve Albini, really…

Kitty girlz…Probably the best advice I can offer if for you to find a trusted adult and just talk. A parent, aunt, uncle, neighbor, teacher, guidance counselor, priest…someone, anyone you feel comfortable with. That to me is an important first step for dealing with any difficult situation. You need to talk to somebody. After that, things will come together a little at a time, but you’ve gotta commit to helping yourself and you’ve gotta keep the dialogue open.

Part of changing your life is changing your internal dialogue. We all have thoughts that aren’t very nice at times, and too often those thoughts are directed upon ourselves. That’s a good part of what causes destructive behaviour (like cutting).

It takes a conscious effort sometimes, but it’s necessary for your survival to try to find SOME good in your lives. If you’ve spiraled too far into the darkness, try volunteering at a homeless shelter, hospital or a veteran’s home. It’s easier to appreciate what you do have when faced with others in a worse plight.

uhh well, heres how i see it, emo is another branch from punk…it involves a bit of the punk and goth theme. Personally, people call me emo at skool, im 16, my life is ok, can be better at times, its hard at times too, just coz i wear black(which looks good on me) and have long black hair, and can play guitar, doesnt mean im emo. People, “Emo” is just another teenage tribe, like “chavs” or “grungers”. In my opinion, people that follow tribes are all the same, I mean nearly all the people that have “defended” the emo culture have had bad grammar and clearly do not know how to spell. I think my point is, its just a group of teenagers that listen to certain music and wear certain clothes and think they’re different, but in reality they are just “normal” teenagers that follow a certain fashion, its nothing new…

They think that they are different but if you take time to think about it, all these kids are the same, they type like they text, they defend their “tribe” saying that what they do is right or in their own right as some put it. Its the media people, you get these emo bands poisoning young minds with their wining, you know those “punk” (i really don’t understand why people classify emo as punk) bands that sing about their depression and how they cut themselves, so these kids listen to it and take it to heart, and tell everyone how depressed they are but in most cases they are bored middle class teenagers with absolutely nothing to do but follow a tribe.

I really hope that I’ve made my point clear, “emos” are just teenagers, one day they will grow out of it, get jobs and realize that they were just stupid kids.

None of them are really depressed, they probably don’t know what depression is, its just a fad people! Let them be emos, they’re no different than anybody else, they’re just kids. I’d like to do a survey to see how many of these kids actually DO cut themselves, i bet hardley any emos actually do, they’re just posers!

I’d also like to point out that I’m a 16 year old boy, and i see these sorts of people all the time, i don’t label myself, i am what i am, and life is a whole lot better like that. This is exactly how i feel about it, if you do have access to all that stuff, then your life probably isn’t that bad really, and if your genuinely depressed then following a trend certainly isn’t the way to go about getting help for it. Like i said before, no one will take you seriously if you follow a certain “tribe”, there are millions of kids all over the world that claim to be depressed, dress up a certain way and listen to certain music, so why in the world do emos think they are gonna get noticed?

I mean I’m diverse, and i believe that people should express themselves in whatever way they wish to, listen to whatever music they are into, and dress in what ever way seems appealing to them, but the fact that millions of kids are crying out claiming to be depressed and moaning about how bad their life is even though most of them come from perfectly normal homes and have had sheltered childhoods and have never really taken any shit in their lives just annoys me, depression is not a joke, there are people out there with serious problems, being like everyone else and claiming your depressed is actually really stupid, but i suppose thats just kids for ya!

If you feel you need to cut yourself, talk to someone about your problems! I’ve gone through some bad times, but no matter how bad its gotten, i’ve never felt the need to harm myself in any sort of way, but i can relate to the fact that times get hard and things don’t go your way, but there’s still no real reason to cut yourself, life is a beautiful thing, I’m not saying life can’t be unbearable, but there’s always a way out (Note that neither suicide or self harm are ways out, they’re ways of giving up).

Self harm is a serious problem, especially when people with real problems are doing it, but when a relatively normal teenager does it because he’s an emo has gotta be one of the stupidest things a person can do.

I guess what I’m saying is, I do not disagree with the ways people dress and act, that’s fair enough, what gets me is the way that people take their “culture” to seriously, like hip-hop heads that take rap lyrics seriously, or emos that take the whole depression thing to seriously.
